Ally McCoist wants Duncan Ferguson to get the Everton job

Ally McCoist thinks it’s a ‘no-brainer’ for Everton to appoint Duncan Ferguson as the next permanent manager after they sacked Rafa Benitez.

Benitez was sacked after defeat to Norwich at the weekend, making it just one win from 13 in the Premier League.

Reports suggest that Ferguson is among a six-man shortlist to replace the Spaniard, alongside Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Graham Potter, Roberto Martinez and Rudi Garcia [Alan Myers].

McCoist was speaking on talkSPORT when he claimed it was a no-brainer for the former Scottish striker to get the nod on a permanent basis, with his relationship with the fans among the reasons why.

“I don’t think they have to look very far, Woodsy, to be brutally honest with you. I think they look (for Big Dunc), yes. That’s exactly where they look.

“That man has done it before, there is absolutely nobody who knows the club better. I think he has a relationship with supporters that every manager in the country would die for to tell you the truth.

“That will cut him a bit of slack but once he gets in there it’ll be just the same as any other manager, it’s results how you’re judged.

“I just think it’s a no-brainer.”

The answer?

Ferguson did a great job as the interim boss a few years ago following the departure of Marco Silva, but whether the job is for him full-time is another matter entirely.

‘Big Dunc’ clearly loves the club dearly and has a great relationship with the fans, so the last thing he or they would want is for him to fail and see that relationship tarnished.

We’ve seen it in the past with the likes of Frank Lampard at Chelsea and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United where fans have turned on a legend, and it’s not nice to see.

There are far more qualified options for the role who would be interested and have more experience in taking Everton to where they want to be.

While Ferguson is without doubt the most romantic appointment of the lot, it’s probably the one that makes the least sense from a long-term perspective. No thanks.
