Everton are 'not currently considering' Fabio Cannavaro for their vacant managers position, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The World Cup winner has been linked with the job in recent days, with The Telegraph reporting that he had been interviewed and was among the final three candidates.

Liverpool Echo are now reporting however that while he held 'preliminary discussions' about the role with the club, he is not currently being considered for the role.

The outlet say he is 'not in the frame to replace sacked Rafa Benitez at present' and the club remain interested in Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Roberto Martinez and potentially Duncan Ferguson to lead the club going forward.

Ferguson was appointed as the interim manager 'for the upcoming games' but is interested in the role on a full-time basis. He will be in charge when the Toffees host Aston Villa on Saturday.

Conflicting

The story is interesting because it directly conflicts with other stories that have come out after talks.

While Everton could well be putting out different stories to double bluff everyone, it seems as though the chase for a new manager is far from over at this point.

Cannavaro would have been a bit of a left-field appointment anyway, having only ever managed in China and the middle east prior to this interview.

He recently turned down the position of manager for the Poland national team ahead of their World Cup qualifier playoff in March.

All signs point towards Rooney being the main target for the role now that Martinez is seemingly out of the picture, but it's not done until it's done and until then you can't rule Cannavaro, or anyone else, out.
