Everton ready to hijack Newcastle swoop to sign Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli

Everton are among the clubs ready to “hijack” Newcastle United’s late January attempts to sign Dele Alli from Tottenham, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports that Newcastle have been leading the race to sign Alli, 25, with the January transfer window less than a week away from closing.

However, it is understood that Everton, Brighton and Burnley are ready to “hijack” Newcastle’s move for the ex-MK Dons midfielder and lining up a move for him if he’s still a Tottenham player “at the start of next week”.

Borussia Dortmund are also said to be keen on Alli but a move to Germany seems to be unlikely.

Who is behind this?

If Everton sign anyone between now and the transfer deadline on 31 January and they don’t have a manager, then it’s just ridiculous to think that a club can be run this way.

Marcel Brands has gone. Rafa Benitez has gone. Duncan Ferguson is only a caretaker manager. Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright should be setting their sights firmly on hiring a new manager to replace Benitez.

Who, in the middle of all this, has turned around and said: ‘You know what? Let’s sign Alli from Tottenham.’

It makes no sense that the club would operate like this when so many names are still being linked with the vacancy at Goodison Park.

Vitor Pereira sounds as though he’s the favourite but there’s no way he’d be making transfer calls already.

Alli has struggled under numerous managers at Tottenham now and we really don’t see how he’d fit in at Everton unless a new manager came in right now and was perfect for him.

Mauricio Pochettino, anyone?
