Alex Iwobi reveals ‘talk of the changing room’ after Everton lose 1-0 v Man City

Everton put up a stern test for the Premier League champions Manchester City yesterday but they eventually fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

Phil Foden capitalised from a horror moment by Toffees defender Michael Keane to score the only goal of the game but the controversy came late on as Everton were denied a late penalty.

It looked from every angle that Rodri had used his arm to control the ball in the City penalty area and despite a VAR check, the officials somehow came to the conclusion that he had done nothing wrong.

It was a baffling decision and one that Frank Lampard’s players couldn’t help but discuss in the dressing room as Alex Iwobi revealed to Everton TV.

“We should have had a penalty. It’s been the talk of the changing room. We’re all shocked but it’s just something we have to get on with. The decision has been made and we have to focus on the next game now.”

The rub of the green

If you ever wanted proof that teams at the top of the league get favourable decisions, here it is.

Even the most loyal Manchester City supporter would probably agree that it was a penalty and yet the referee and his VAR team didn’t.

That is the luck you can sometimes get when you’re at the top of the league and simultaneously the misfortune that usually hits those fighting at the bottom.

It was a real punch to the gut of Lampard and Everton who fought so bravely for the entire game and they deserved that golden chance to level the game and take something from it.

But it wasn’t to be and as Iwobi says. the squad must move on quickly to the next game with redemption firmly in their sights.
