Dr Dan: Everton possibly got better deal externally than the £45m council one

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Everton appear to have got a better deal than what Liverpool City Region Combined Authority provided them for the new stadium.

That’s according to Dr Dan Plumlely who claims that the external lenders may have charged the club a lower rate of interest.

This development comes after Liverpool mayor Steve Rotheram announced that the club are no longer in need of £30million from the £45million they had borrowed.

Via the BBC, he said, “Earlier this year, Everton Football Club notified the LCRCA that it had found alternative sources of funding from the private sector and would therefore no longer require the £30m loan.

“We are in contact with Everton about the next steps on the £15m grant, which is intended to preserve the historical assets of the Bramley Dock area, support the wider development of the site, create jobs for local people, and attract visitors to the region.”

Speaking to Goodison News about this, the Sheffield Hallam University expert said,

“I think that’s what you’re looking at with different lenders possibly charging a lower rate of interest.

“We don’t know what that better deal and is and we might never know until we see it in some of the numbers further down the line.

“You’ve got to assume that the package they got worked as a better deal for them than the council.”

Everton are on course to building their new stadium at Bramley Moore-Dock by 2024/25.

They have severed all ties with Alisher Usmanov after he was hit with sanctions for close associations with Vladimir Putin.

In other Everton news, a football finance expert has made a claim on the new Toffees stadium amid a major £300m development in the last week.
