Everton want to sign Mainz defender Moussa Niakhate

Everton are among three Premier League clubs chasing a deal for Mainz defender Moussa Niakhate, according to The Telegraph.

The 26-year-old will have just one more year on his contract with the Bundesliga club come the summer and they might be tempted to cash in with the interest of the Premier League.

West Ham and Newcastle are the other teams most interested right now with Mainz likely to ask for just £8million to let him leave the club in the summer.

There is further competition however from clubs playing Champions League football in Germany who could tempt him to stay in the country with European football a big draw.

Everton’s pursuit of the former French youth international entirely depends on them retaining their Premier League status.

Anyone will do

Given how this season has gone, there isn’t many of the current crop of Everton players who can genuinely claim they deserve their starting birth in Frank Lampard’s team.

Niakhate would surely waltz into the Toffees’ starting XI if he were to arrive on Merseyside next season and him alongside Yerry Mina might be the partnership they’ve been craving for all season long.

It’s not a stupid amount of money either but that is where things might be tricky for Everton.

West Ham could have European football to offer the 26-year-old whereas Newcastle can probably offer five times what the Toffees can in terms of wages which might make Everton his third choice.

The only hope they might have is having a very famous manager in Lampard and Niakhate might want to play under such a footballing legend at Goodison Park.
