Alan Stubbs stunned by shocking decision in Everton loss v Liverpool

Alan Stubbs has been left stunned by the referee’s decision to wave away Anthony Gordon’s penalty appeal as Everton lost 2-0 against Liverpool.

Gordon was brilliant during the game as he was involved in some controversial moments during Sunday’s Premier League defeat at Anfield.

The Toffees did well to keep the Reds quiet in the first 45 minutes, but goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi sealed the tie for the home side.

Stubbs wrote on Twitter: “Unbelievable how that’s not a pen.”

Big moment

Everton came up with the game plan to frustrate Liverpool at Anfield, and they were successful in doing so in the opening 45 minutes.

Gordon was lively throughout the game, and he appeared to have won a penalty after Joel Matip fouled him in the box in the second half.

There was a clear contact in the box but the decision to overturn the appeal has stunned everyone.

If Everton could have taken the lead had the penalty been given, they could have tried to at least get a point from the game.

However, the Toffees were undone by some poor referring decisions. Having said that, it proved to be almost impossible in the second half to withstand the barrage of attack from Liverpool, as Robertson finally broke the deadlock.

The defeat puts Everton in a precarious situation in the league. Burnley have seen a swing in momentum with a victory over Wolves that take them ahead of the Toffees.

Everton have dropped down in the relegation zone, with two points behind the Clarets, having played a game less.

In other Everton news, a football finance expert has made a claim on the new Toffees stadium amid a major £300m development in the last week.
