Andy Townsend: Criticism of Frank Lampard style of play at Everton unfair

Andy Townsend believes that the criticism of Frank Lampard’s style of play at Everton is unfair, given the circumstances.

He is of the opinion that if Jose Mourinho was the manager then few people would doubt this pragmatism.

The Portuguese manager has done the same thing with Manchester United, Chelsea as well as Tottenham Hotspur.

Looking at the footage of the Toffees sitting in a low block against Liverpool, Townsend, a Sky Sports pundit, said on the Premier League Analytics Show, “If it was Jose Mourinho he would do the same thing. I think the criticism is unfair.”

Bizarre comparison

Townsend speaks as if Mourinho’s style of football is desirable by fans of his club.

At all three clubs, he was booted partly because his football did not resonate with the fans.

Had it led to results and wins on the table, then few would complain, but things got sour pretty soon.

With Lampard, he took over from Rafa Benitez, who was slammed for the same kind of pragmatism.

There has been no real upgrade since he left so the fans are justified in being tetchy about matches and what the future holds.

As of now, they’re in the midst of a serious relegation battle and it remains to be seen how it all transpires.
