Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford wowed Jamie Redknapp with save of the season against Chelsea
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made the save of the season in the Premier League for the Toffees against Chelsea according to Jamie Redknapp.
The England international somehow clawed out Cesar Azpilicueta’s shot from behind his goalline after rushing across from his dive against Mason Mount’s attempt, then blocking Antonio Rudiger’s thunderbolt with his face from the following corner.
Both helped Frank Lampard’s side to claim a precious three points in their fight for survival and Redknapp was full of praise for 28-year-old Pickford.
“That’s what they do every day in training goalkeepers,” he told Sky Sports Premier League (1 May).
“You need those moments, you need a little bit of luck in football.”
“I think so (save of the season), he’s going the wrong way and has to somehow get his body back across the line.”
“Brilliant save.”
Top Notch
Pickford can have his moments but there’s no doubt when he’s on form England’s number one is capable of some spectacular saves in between the sticks.
He’s picked a great moment to do just that for Everton as he played a huge role in claiming an absolutely vital three points for the Toffees, putting them in a position to have their destiny in their own hands with five games remaining.
It means Frank Lampard’s men have now picked up 1-0 victories against Newcastle, Manchester United and Chelsea at Goodison since the middle of March, a testament to how important the home crowd has been in helping the players dig themselves out of trouble.
There’s still an awful lot of work to be done but if Pickford can finish the season off in equally electrifying form, you wouldn’t want to write the Toffees out of it just yet.
