Everton sign first Canadian club up to trans-Atlantic academy scheme

Everton have secured an international partnership with Canadian club A.K Soccer Academy as they join the Toffees International Academy Affiliate Programme.

The EIAAP will provide the Winnipeg based side with full access to Everton academy resources plus support from staff based at Finch Farm.

It comes as part of a growing effort from the club to grow their influence across the Atlantic with A.K becoming the ninth club to join the initiative.

“We are delighted to welcome a club as ambitious as A.K. Academy as our first Canadian affiliate,” Everton International Technical Lead Paddy Byrne told club media (4 May).

“With recent World Cup qualification, there is so much potential for the growth of soccer in Canada, and A.K. Academy is at the forefront of developing the game in Winnipeg.

“With a focus on quality and player-centred development, we have a shared approach, and we are looking forward to accompanying them on their exciting journey.”

Steps Forward

Whilst actions on the pitch have left a lot to be desired it’s good to see the club laying the groundwork for the future off it.

This partnership, if all works as intended, should be mutually beneficial for both parties as A.K. receive first-class training from an elite English academy whilst Everton gain direct access to a country which is emerging as a hotbed for footballing talent.

Canada’s second World Cup qualification in their history is a testament to the progress being made and the emergence of talents such as Alphonso Davies and Johnathan David at top European sides suggests the upward trend can continue with future generations.

Getting in early seems to be a wise move as clubs look to capitalise on a nation where interest in the game is set to skyrocket as the buildup to football’s biggest tournament hots up.

Everton sadly can’t be accused of making too many smart decisions recently, but this one could end up being a masterstroke in a few years time.
