Kevin Campbell sure Everton must sell £120k-a-week Andre Gomes as part of major overhaul

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

There has to be major changes made to the Everton squad in the summer and expensive misfit Andre Gomes has to go says Kevin Campbell.

The Portuguese midfielder is one of the club’s highest earners, with Football Insider reporting at the time of his arrival from Barcelona in 2019 that he would be making £120,000-a-week at Goodison.

With the club’s financial problems now well-known, and the 28-year-old only making 12 league appearances this year – completing 90 minutes just twice – ex-Toffee Campbell believes he has to be a candidate for the exit even if relegation is avoided.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News Campbell backed previous calls for an overhaul, saying: “Again, there’s got to be wholesale changes.

There’s no point having your big earner sitting on the bench or not performing.

“That’s not happening.

“And I truly believe Frank Lampard knows exactly what he wants to do. He just needs to secure the Premier League status.”

It may seem harsh on Gomes considering the severity of the injury he suffered in his first season after signing on a permanent deal, but if he isn’t playing he isn’t justifying his contract.

The club need to make sure they are getting value for money everywhere considering the state of the accounts over recent seasons, and would do well to improve that as a rule.

Although he surely could be a much more important performer somewhere else, finding a taker may be tricky for the very same reasons the club would be looking to move him on – there hasn’t been enough evidence recently that he’s worth that amount.

In other Everton news, one former Premier League goalkeeper has raved about the Toffees outstanding number one, doesn’t understand the criticism.
