Michael Owen: Leeds United dropping points will keep Everton up
Michael Owen believes that Everton did not drop points against Watford, but actually gained one on Wednesday night. (May 11).
The Toffees were held to a 0-0 draw against the already-relegated Hornets but as Leeds United lost their game to Chelsea, it was a point gained for the Blues in the battle to avoid the drop.
Leeds appear nailed on favourites to finish 18th and Owen thinks that it will be enough to keep Everton up.
He said on Premier League’s post-match show, “When you see Leeds losing, point is not a bad result. Lampard would love a win but he would settle for this. It’s massive in the grand scheme of things and I think they’ve got the best chance among the three teams to stay up.”
Few weeks ago, Everton looked down and out and it seemed like the world was coming tumbling down on their shoulders.
However, they have managed to turn fortunes around and are now favourites to finish 16th and avoid the drop.
Burnley have some tricky games coming up and Leeds don’t seem to know where they can find points from.
While the Toffees have been far from perfect, these factors have perfectly played into their hands and they have capitalised on it.
Giving Frank Lampard credit for a job half done is premature, but it remains to be seen if he can safely see this side over the line and then will be judged on what he does next season.
It’s not going to be easy but he will win a few brownie points with the fans if he manages to finish 17th or higher this term.
