Lampard would’ve fancied his chances of bringing the midfielder to Goodison Park, had he’d been allowed to leave this summer.

With Lampard’s links to Chelsea, another loan spell away from Stamford Bridge would’ve made sense for the 22-year-old, especially if it was under the stewardship of the former Chelsea boss.

For Gallagher, it is crucial that he is featuring every week for Chelsea, because if he had made the move to Merseyside, he would’ve been playing every single Premier League game for Lampard’s side.

At 22, he is at an age where he cannot afford for his career to slow down in any way.

After a superb year at Crystal Palace and making his England debut, he won’t want to ruin his progress by bench-warming at Stamford Bridge.

Everton will need to ensure they stick to their transfer strategy of targeting younger players on an upward trajectory, as opposed to merely throwing money at over-paid and underperforming players.

Luckily for Lampard, it is the beginning of the summer and there will be a plethora of other targets for him to explore before the window slams shut.
