Sky Sports pundit predicts imminent Everton signing James Tarkowski will be Goodison favourite

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Everton signing James Tarkowski will go “a long way” towards solving the the defensive issues which plagued them through 2021/22 says Kevin Campbell.

Guardian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on his Twitter on 8 June that a verbal agreement had been reached for the former Burnley centre-back and paperwork was now being sorted, and The Athletic reported the same day he was having a medical, so his arrival is thought to be imminent.

The back line was considered a major weakness as the club battled relegation so help in that area was a key priority for the summer rebuild, and Sky Sports pundit Campbell predicts the 29-year-old to become a favourite at the club because he fits the bill to address the issue head-on.

“I think it’s a much-needed signing,” he said speaking exclusively to Goodison News.

“Tarkowski is a no-nonsense defender. He does his job. And he’s always available, which is really important, and he just gets on with it.

“I think he’ll be a favourite at Goodison because, if I’m honest with you, he just concentrates on defending.

“He’ll defend, and he’ll defend properly, which is what Everton need.

“Everton need to fix that defence and fix the midfield.

“If they fix that then they’ll be fine, and Tarkowski’s signing goes a long way to fixing a real problem area.”

Much has been made of how the Toffees should never have been in the lowly situation they found themselves in during the season just gone.

But it will still be a big job for Frank Lampard to lift them back to somewhere closer to where fans expect them to be, and there aren’t extensive funds to do it with.

His wages won’t be cheap, but as a free transfer the former England international looks to be the ideal first step to the rebuild in the circumstances.

In other Everton news, one summer target looks to be heading on loan but it will take major money from Goodison to hijack the deal.
