Finance expert delivers verdict on Everton sponsorship crisis amid £10m development

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Everton recently announced a club-record sponsorship deal with gambling company Stake.com which is reported to be in excess of £10million per season.

However, according to Dr Dan Plumley, this does not represent a significant rise from their previous deal with Cazoo which makes it quite a surprising one.

He does understand the fact that the club are in financial turmoil and would want to get whatever money they can ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Cazoo parted ways with the club in March 2022 when it seemed like they were heading towards a season in the Championship.

Discussing the new deal, the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Goodison News,

“My concern is that it does not seem to be that big an increase from the Cazoo deal but they are under pressure to generate because of the sponsorship they have lost.

“Maybe a million or two more but then there’s an argument that it’s money they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

“Bigger picture, they are under pressure to generate money because of all the sponsorships they’ve lost but it does seem strange that they’ve gone with a gambling sponsor after cancelling their deal two years ago.

“It is money on the table and the best that they’ve got.”

Sanctioning Alisher Usmanov saw Everton ending numerous deals which were understood to be in the region of £20million.

The club are understood to be in the midst of a potential takeover with the Peter Kenyon-fronted consortium keen on buying the club.
