Sky Sports pundit spots Everton strategy in chase for £25million Morgan Gibbs-White

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell doesn’t think “anybody’s going to argue with” Everton paying £25million for Morgan Gibbs-White during the transfer window.

It emerged this week that the Toffees were ready to make an offer for the 22-year-old who Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth has reported Wolves valued at that price, after an excellent year in the Championship on loan with Sheffield United.

The versatile Englishman can play in a variety of positions and after 20 combined league goals and assists in the 2021/22 campaign Sky Sports pundit Campbell is right behind the club’s move, and believes it shows Frank Lampard’s strategy going forward will be to develop talented youngsters.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “I think Frank Lampard knows Morgan Gibbs-White.

“I think he’s a good young player, good quality, and I think Frank Lampard wants to build something with talented young players.

“Because if you’re going to go down the route of trying to sign, and we’ve seen Everton do it, players at £50-£60million you have to get it right every time.

“But somebody like that, English, 22, talented, you get more tries at it.

“And fans will be more willing to give you an opportunity.

“Plus, it’s somebody who Frank Lampard feels he can develop, that’s important as well.

“Not only is he a good player, but he’s somebody you can develop.

“So I like it.

“Hey listen, at the end of the day, you have to put the money down to get these guys.

“A good young player, like I say, you put £25million down, I don’t think anybody’s going to argue with that.

“Although he’s very sought after. That’s why it might be £25million because I think Nottingham Forest and stuff like that are looking.”

Gibbs-White has now reportedly rejected a contract offer at his current side so should definitely be available this summer, although it appears Crystal Palace will be stiff competition for his signature [90min].

It is a gamble considering his main experience is in the second tier, but there have to be parallels between the way Mason Mount went from a strong Championship performer under the Toffees manager at Derby to the same thing in the Premier League when both returned to Chelsea.

If the Wolves man can do anything similar, the creativity and goal-threat is something that makes him extremely attractive, both in his own right and for what he could do for the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
