Idrissa Gueye in Merseyside for medical to seal Everton transfer - Fabrizio Romano
Idriss Gueye has travelled to Merseyside to undergo a medical ahead of his protracted return to Everton, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Toffees have moved to bring the 32-year-old Senegal international back to Goodison Park as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.
Now a deal has been agreed with Paris Saint-Germain and with only the final details left to be resolved the player is already in the UK for a medical after agreeing to the transfer.
Everton are said to be offering Gueye a short-term contract, with some concerns over his age and how long he will be able to perform at the top level.
Gueye played for Everton between 2016 and 2019 and made over 100 appearances before moving to PSG in a £30m deal.
The midfield has been desperate for reinforcements this summer and this seems like a shrewd bit of business for Frank Lampard and Kevin Thelwell at this moment.
Gueye has got great experience and during his time in the Premier League he was one of the best performing defensive midfielders in the league.
While he’s past his prime these days, he’s still a very effective option to have for particular games and provides good quality depth for Lampard to choose from too.
Knowing the club as well as he does means it shouldn’t take too long for him to settle in and start performing well too, while the fee is likely to be minimal meaning that other areas of the squad can still be strengthened.
Attack is an area that needs to be improved desperately, but the midfield has now been addressed ahead of the season opener against Chelsea and fans can feel much happier about the window than they did two weeks ago.
