Big chance for Dele Alli to silence his critics after Everton suffer Dominic Calvert-Lewin injury blow
Everton have suffered a huge blow ahead of their Premier League opening game against Chelsea, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin being ruled out due to an injury.
The England striker has picked up a freakish injury in training, and as per Paul Joyce of The Times (3 August), he is expected to be out for a month.
It leaves Everton short of options upfront. Lewis Dobbin could have been an option but he has joined on loan to Derby County instead.
Frank Lampard will definitely be looking to add a new striker before the end of the transfer window, but for now, he must come up with an alternative plan.
According to Liverpool Echo (3 August), Dele Alli could be used as an option upfront in the false nine role.
Alli, who joined in the January transfer window, failed to make an impact at Goodison Park, and going by his performances in the pre-season, doesn’t give enough optimism either.
Since Mauricio Pochettino left Spurs, Alli’s career has gone downhill, and it seems he has got no clue how to get it back on track. He is struggling to be the version he once was when he burst onto the scene.
One struggle to remember when was the last time Alli stole the show all by himself. He has been heavily criticised in the press for not being able to apply himself.
As it stands, Lampard is ready to give him another chance, and Alli must grab it with both hands.
While the 26-year-old is not a striker, he can still be a lethal weapon in the new role. Known for his ability to run into the box, and get into good scoring positions, Alli can reinvent himself this season.
This is a big test for him. There are many who are still willing to give Alli the benefit of the doubt – it’s time for the midfielder to prove their faith in him is not misplaced.
