Amadou Onana turned down major Euro interest to play under Frank Lamprd and with Idrissa Gueye

Amadou Onana wanted to join Everton over major European clubs because of the chance to play under Frank Lampard and alongside Idrissa Gueye.

That’s according to former BBC journalist Fraser Fletcher, who says the player believes he could form a great partnership in midfield with the Senegalese international.

Both players are said to be close to a move to Goodison Park, with Sky Sports reporting the 20-year-old is already on Merseyside for a medical ahead of his £33.6m move.

Everton moved to get a deal done after West Ham agreed a fee for the player, with his preference to join Lampard in blue as one of his idols.

Gueye has also reportedly undergone a medical on Merseyside ahead of his return to the club from Paris Saint-Germain, but neither deal has been officially confirmed yet.

Lampard pull

One of the big plusses of appointing Lampard at the time we did was the fact that he would be able to attract top talents to play under him because of his playing career.

We immediately saw it in January with Dele Alli and Donny Van de Beek joining, but now James Tarkowski and Onana have joined the party too.

It’s great to have a manager with great talent ID as one of his strengths, but more importantly it’s balancing and bolstering a squad that needed a lot of work this summer.

The final part that needs strengthening this summer is the attack, following the loss of Richarlison and the injury problems that Dominic Calvert-Lewin has.

There’s a little under a month to go to get it done, but fans trust Lampard to be able to attract the right profile of player into Everton to help move away from a relegation battle and instead work towards getting into Europe where the club belongs.
