Frank Lampard may pay price as Everton field back three v Chelsea

Frank Lampard has named his first Everton squad of the season and has given a debut to attacker Dwight McNeil on the wings.

The former Chelsea manager has named a back three against Thomas Tuchel’s side as he looks to contain the onslaught the London side will provide.

However, with a back three of Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey and James Tarkowski, it will be hard for them to find cohesion among themselves.

For starters, the three have not played together as a trio and Chelsea are no team to be experimenting it against.

Secondly, Tuchel plays a back three and his system is not easy to play against, especially if the system is like-for-like.

On paper, Chelsea players are better than the Everton ones and the lack of experience in the Toffees squad may lead to their downfall.

Lampard should’ve asked his players to play the system they’re used to and this could be scary, especially given the fact that they do not have a recognised number nine in the team.

The likes of Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray will have to step up while we’re unsure how exactly Dwight McNeil will fare.

Ideally a back four with two hard working wingers would’ve been better to contain the Chelsea wing-backs and this one could end up extremely badly for the Toffees.

Hopefully, Lampard has thought this one through otherwise it’s extremely difficult to see them getting anything from this one.
