Danny Murphy tells Anthony Gordon to stay at Everton amid £45m Chelsea interest
Danny Murphy believes Anthony Gordon would be better staying at Everton, despite £45m interest from Chelsea in signing him this summer.
The Toffees have so far turned down bids from the London club for their star attacker, but they are expected to return with a £50m offer which could tempt Frank Lampard’s side to sell.
But speaking on BBC Match of the Day [August 20], former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Murphy told the 21-year-old he would be better off staying at Goodison Park for his development.

“I think he’d be better staying and playing every week at Everton to learn,” Murphy said.
“And I think Everton need to keep him, so long as they can find some money to sign a striker.”
Necessity
There’s no doubt that Everton need a striker, but bringing one in and then selling the other star man in attack is just counter productive and leaves the club with a huge problem.
Right now goals are a massive issue in the side and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s persistent injury problems there isn’t a reliable goalscorer at the club currently.
One needs to come in and that will cost big money, but there needs to be some thought behind the deal. Bringing someone in and losing Gordon, the chief creator and driving force in the attack, will mean the new striker has little service to feed off.
There needs to be a compromise found, and hopefully the club can convince Gordon that Everton is the right place for him to develop and grow as a footballer and that he doesn’t need to go elsewhere.
A new contract would be ideal to show the ambition of the club to their top young talents and put everyone on notice that there is a plan in place to get back to where they belong in the Premier League table.
