Andros Townsend Everton exit could open door for January move for Mykhaylo Mudryk

Andros Townsend looks set to leave Everton in the January window – and that could give the Toffees the green light to sign Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Mykhaylo Mudryk.

According to Calcio Mercato (9 September), the Toffees are planning a January bid for the 21-year-old Ukrainian international with Arsenal also hot on the winger’s heels.

Turkish Fanatik reported (7 September) that Trabzonspor made a late move for the 31-year-old Townsend and it now seems apparent that his Goodison Park days are numbered.

If Everton can shift Townsend early on in the January window then they could well make room for Mudryk to make the move to Goodison Park.

Townsend is another prime example of a player who has not hit the heights expected of him since his move to Merseyside, and at 31, there is little reason for him to remain at the club beyond January.

Frank Lampard and Kevin Thelwell are trying to implement a new recruitment philosophy at the club which involves looking at younger players on an upward trajectory and the 21-year-old Ukrainian winger is a good example of the type of player they want at the club.

Furthermore, it’s refreshing to see Everton begin to plan for the next transfer window slightly better than they did for the summer window, which saw the Toffees take a long time to get going.

If they want to stand any hope of signing Mudryk, then they will have to be shrewd negotiators, with Mikel Arteta and Arsenal also very keen on the Ukrainian prodigy.

This is certainly one to keep an eye on, especially if Townsend departs the club.
