Jose Mourinho Sasa Lukic proposal a major blow to Everton January transfer hopes

Everton have reportedly been keeping track of wantaway Torino midfielder Sasa Lukic with Leeds United also hot on the trail of the Serbian.

Torinogranata suggested (22 November) the Toffees and Leeds’ interest in the midfielder was set to increase as the January window edges closer.

Lukic’s contract in Turin expires in the summer of 2024, and ForzaRoma suggest (23 November) he could be available for £12.9million, with the 26-year-old unlikely to sign a new deal at the club.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma have previously shown interest in the midfielder, but Torino’s valuation of Lukic was too high for the Serie A side. However, the latest report to emerge from Italy could well be a fatal blow to Everton’s and Leeds’ hopes of landing the combative midfielder.

Calciomercato suggest (30 November) Mourinho has yet to give up his pursuit of Lukic, with the former Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United manager eager to utilise a potential “exchange” to get a deal completed.

22-year-old Marash Kumbulla is the player the Roma boss is eager to move on, with the defender only amassing three league appearances so far in the 2022/23 season.

A move to another Serie A club does look like the most likely destination for Lukic, who is potentially happy and settled in Italy, and with Roma potentially competing for European football at the end of the season, it could well be a more attractive proposition than making the switch to the Premier League.

Lukic is currently at the World Cup representing Serbia, and it’s good to see Everton linked with players of his calibre. Sadly, a move to the Premier League does look unlikely after the latest developments.
