Chris Sutton tips England manager Gareth Southgate to take over at Everton

Chris Sutton believes that Gareth Southgate would be a good manager for Everton after his impressive performances as the England head coach.

The Three Lions boss’ stock appears to be at an all-time high despite the 2-1 defeat against France which led to England being knocked out of the World Cup.

Sutton then discussed with New York Times journalist Rory Smith which clubs would ideally have Southgate in the Premier League.

Everton

Speaking on The Monday Night Club, Smith said, “But I think that is an unfair thought process, because unless you’re given the opportunity of a top, top club and having been a relatively successful manager at international level I’m not sure that ticks every box of the top six clubs.

“I guess you’re looking at Leicester, West Ham, that sort of level.”

To which Sutton said, “Everton.”

Right fit?

Southgate may be earning plaudits for finally making an England side competitive in major tournaments but he may not be the best club manager.

International football is a completely different ball game and managers barely have any time to work on tactics.

It mainly is about picking the right personalities and ensuring that they gel well with each other with limited work on the training ground.

Southgate may be admired by the likes of Gary Lineker, and rightly so, but his record as a club manager is far from impressive.

If Frank Lampard leaves, and there’s every chance he does, with the Three Lions to consider him for the job if Southgate resigns, then Everton need to appoint someone with a proven track record in club football.

If Southgate does think that he can make it in club football, the Toffees must wait and see how he fares elsewhere and then make a move for him in the future.
