Journalist details Everton transfer ‘priority’ after summer saga

Everton have prioritised signing a goalscoring winger in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Star’s Paul Brown.

The Telegraph suggest (1 January) that Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga has been made a prime target by the Toffees as Frank Lampard looks to improve his squad.

It’s since been suggested by Brown that a winger who can operate in a central area is top of the Everton boss’ wishlist, after failing to land a similar type of player in the summer.

“The one player they didn’t sign for Lampard, that he wanted in the last window, was a wide forward, the goalscoring winger, and that I think is the priority,” Brown told GIVEMESPORT (1 January).

“If they could sign one who also slots in as a kind of makeshift centre-forward, I think they would.”

Priority?

With Andros Townsend facing an extremely uncertain future at Goodison Park, it could make sense for Everton to target another winger in the January window.

However, whether it should be his priority is up for debate. Neal Maupay has been a disappointing addition since arriving from Brighton and Dominic Calvert-Lewin cannot be trusted to stay fit for a long period of time.

Another striker should surely be higher up on Lampard’s wishlist. Everton have been fairly ineffectual in front of goal and relied on a moment of brilliance from Demarai Gray to rescue a well-earned point against Manchester City.

It could well prove a vital draw come the end of the season with it being unlikely Everton’s relegation rivals will come away from The Etihad with a point. It’s now important for Lampard to build on the positive performance against Pep Guardiola’s side with three points against Brighton at Goodison Park on 3 January.
