Amadou Onana comments surely a concern for Everton, he wants 'titles'

Amadou Onana has been a revelation for Everton since moving to the club during the summer window, however, his latest comments could be a cause for concern.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been a constant at the heart of the Toffees’ starting eleven in the 2022/23 campaign, having featured in 26 Premier League fixtures.

Despite his relatively large transfer fee, the move for Onana has proven to be a smart piece of work by the board, with the Belgium international’s value only set to rise.

The Telegraph claimed (24 January) that Chelsea were looking to land Onana, with Everton desperate to raise funds during the latter stages of the transfer window.

However, a move didn’t materialise and the summer signing has remained an integral part of Sean Dyche’s midfield. Despite his impressive first season, the 21-year-old has made his ambitions to win silverware very clear.

“People always say ‘The sky is the limit’, but I would like to aim even higher in my life and career.  Goals, assists, titles, victories. I want the maximum of everything. Without putting a limit on it,” said Onana (interview with Sporza, 21 March).

According to Nieuwsbladsport journalist Pieter-Jan Calcoen (Twitter, 27 January), Onana turned down the chance to move to Stamford Bridge to instead focus on the project at Goodison Park. The decision was admirable, but with his desire to win trophies made clear, just how long will he stay at the club?

A footballer’s career is short and, realistically, silverware is unlikely to grace the blue side of Merseyside anytime soon. He’s a talented prospect and could earn the club a significant transfer fee, the question remains of just how long he will remain with Dyche’s men.

He’s remained loyal thus far, however, it would not be a surprise to see interest resurface again in the summer.
