Alan Shearer tells Gary Lineker to 'stop' over relegation conspiracy after Everton draw v Wolves

Alan Shearer has told Gary Lineker to “stop” after the latter shared a Premier League conspiracy theory following the draw between Everton and Wolves on Saturday (20 May).

Lineker noted that there may be a conspiracy theory to help relegate Leicester given how they will play four Monday night matches in a row.

The pundit was speaking on BBC Match of the Day directly after the coverage of the 1-1 draw between Everton and Wolves.

“For some of us, it makes awfully grim reading but we’ll have a gander, nevertheless,” Lineker said on Match of the Day (27m50s). “Congratulations [to Forest], I’m thrilled for you. I really, genuinely am.

“Huge game [on Sunday], Leeds v West Ham. Leicester obviously play on Monday against Newcastle. Again, it’s four Mondays on the bounce so I don’t know whether this is some kind of plan to make sure Leicester go down. Conspiracy theory there.”

Shearer replied: “Oh, stop it.”

The way it goes

It is definitely strange that Leicester’s fixture against Newcastle United on Monday (22 May) will represent their fourth successive fixture on that day of the week.

But it really is just the way it goes in football, with the fixture lists decided well in advance and with no bias towards any club.

Foxes fans may be feeling there is some sort of bias in the scheduling, but at the end of the day it really shouldn’t be an excuse for the position they find themselves in.

Leicester are in real danger of dropping down to the Championship in what has been a miserable campaign for the club, with the Foxes currently sitting 19th in the table with just two matches remaining.

They will be desperate for the likes of Everton and Leeds United to drop points in their remaining matches, but at this point it seems unlikely that both the Toffees and the Whites will go down.
