Everton transfer blunder on the cards as Tom Davies contract update emerges

Everton could be sleepwalking into yet another transfer blunder as Tom Davies gets ready to enter crunch contract talks at Goodison Park.

The academy graduate’s future under Sean Dyche is far from confirmed, with the 24-year-old out of contract at Everton this summer and by no means guaranteed first-team football in the foreseeable future.

However, according to Football Transfers, the Toffees have offered the midfielder new terms on Merseyside and could find a middle ground with the player, offering him a contract that guarantees a suitable amount of appearances for the next campaign.

Despite arriving at the club as an 11-year-old and subsequently rising the ranks at Goodison Park, it is time for Davies to move on to a new chapter in his career.

Since Dyche’s arrival, the midfielder is yet to start a single game, with the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye and James Garner all above him in the Everton pecking order.

A combination of ill-timed injuries and poor form have seen him barely feature over the last two seasons, and his struggles to cement a regular starting spot surely shouldn’t be rewarded with a new contract.

If Everton wish to leave their relegation fears behind them, they need to take a cut-throat approach to their summer transfer activity and bring in additions who provide consistency and stability moving forward.

Getting Davies off the books could allow Dyche to pursue further transfers this summer, such as helping to fund glaring voids in the first-team squad, such as a centre-forward or a creative midfielder.

Allocating the club’s finances towards a player whose contributions on the pitch have been inconsistent and limited could set a dangerous precedent moving forward, so this is a contract extension that Dyche and Toffees need to steer clear of.

There is interest from the Premier League and Championship for the Englishman, and the club should take this opportunity with open arms.
