BBC pundit reacts as Everton striker Tom Cannon linked with Sunderland transfer

Carlton Palmer has reacted to the news that Sunderland are keen on signing Everton striker Tom Cannon after missing out on Ellis Simms to Coventry City.

Journalist Alan Nixon wrote on his Patreon account on 9 July that the Black Cats are readying a £3million plus bonuses bid for the 20-year-old.

Cannon spent last season out on loan at Preston North End where he bagged eight league goals and provided one assist.

Palmer, a BBC pundit, told Football League World, “Sunderland are still looking to strengthen in the forward department of their squad.

“Ellis Simms has signed for Coventry City for £7 to £8million, who they were hoping to bring into the club after a successful loan period last term.

“Sunderland have now turned their attention to another Everton striker Tom Cannon.

“They’re reported to be preparing to offer £3million plus bonuses for the 20-year-old centre forward, who excelled on loan at Preston North End for the second part of last season scoring eight goals and registering one assist in 20 Championship matches.

“Should Everton decide to sell, this would be a bargain and would represent excellent business given his age and the fact he’s already proven he can play at that level.”

Need more money

Everton cannot accept this lowball offer and they need to hold out for money if they are to part ways with Cannon.

Having already sold Simms, it remains to be seen if Sean Dyche will be open to losing yet another striker this summer.

Since he arrived, a new striker is what he’s wanted and thus far, the board have not delivered by giving him what he wants.

Until that happens he’s probably going to want to keep hold of Cannon as he could offer cover for the first team as well.

He may not be ready to be a regular starter but if he can get minutes off the bench and play the odd cup games, he certainly would progress a great deal.

That said, it’s absolutely important that they bring in a proven senior striker who can play over Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

In other Everton news, an exit-linked Toffees player has recently been spotted in talks with a senior Goodison Park figure ahead of the new season.
