Everton had an interesting summer transfer window to say the least, with plenty of movement in both directions at Goodison Park.

Outgoings included the likes of Alex Iwobi, Tom Cannon and Ellis Simms, with incomings involving players such as Beto, Youssef Chermiti and Ashley Young.

It is, of course, incomings that excite football fans most, but Everton fans weren’t given much to celebrate given how only newly-promoted Luton Town spent less than the Toffees this summer.

As per Sky Sports (2 September), Everton spent a total of £38.7million on new players, with Luton spending a league-low of just £9.5million.

Their fellow newly-promoted clubs Sheffield United and Burnley spent totals of £54.2million and £48.6million respectively.

Worryingly for Sean Dyche and his squad, the Toffees are currently joined in the Premier League relegation zone by the Hatters and the Clarets, with Everton having played one game more than the pair.

The lack of spending at Goodison Park was, however, perhaps expected given the club’s financial struggles in recent times.

The Toffees have come dangerously close to dropping down to the Championship for two years now, with a third successive relegation fight likely to be on the cards once again this season, a direct result of the ongoing financial issues.

Hope has arrived in the form of new strikers Beto and Chermiti, but the attacking duo already have huge pressure on their shoulders given how the £38.7million transfer outlay very much focused on bringing them to Goodison Park.
