Chris Sutton scoffs at ‘excessive’ Leon Osman Everton claim live on BBC ahead of Crystal Palace kick-off
Chris Sutton called it “excessive” for Leon Osman to claim that Everton should have nine extra points already this season ahead of kick off at Crystal Palace.
Speaking on BBC Football Focus on 11 November the former Toffees midfielder had highlighted the developing style of play under Sean Dyche, with finishing a key early deficiency this term as home defeats to Wolves, Fulham and Luton Town should have been won on the basis of the overall team performances.
Osman highlighted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s availability as having helped address the problems in front of goal, with an ability to create chances already far improved from last season, and Sutton agreed the England striker is “key”.

Asked by Alex Scott to explain Dyche-ball Osman said (12.41pm): “It’s a little bit different from Ange [Postecoglou]-ball. It’s a team showing commitment, knowing their jobs, playing football that necessarily isn’t the most pleasing on the eye with regards to possession, it isn’t key to Dyche-ball.
“But what it is is a good defensive structure, counter-attacking well, and creating chances because Everton this season have created more chances per game comfortably than they did last season. The problem had been taking those chances and finishing them.
“In recent weeks having Dominic Calvert-Lewin back and looking more like himself, like the striker that Everton knew that they had, it’s given Everton a new-found belief in scoring goals and they should really have an extra nine points because losing at home to Wolves and Fulham, and even Luton, all three of those games Everton had maybe 20 shots to the opponents five and but for better finishing would have won those games.
“I know it’s all ifs and buts Chris, I can see that look on your face, but that wouldn’t have taken away from some of the performances from Everton this year.”
Scott asked Sutton why he was making a face, and he replied: “Nine points is slightly excessive. I think Leon’s general point about Everton being a slow burner under Dyche, I don’t think anybody expected them getting in a European position this season.
“But I think they’ll be fine, and the point about Dominic Calvert-Lewin is absolutely bang on. He’s key.”
Improved
Everton may still only be 15th coming into the weekend but they are starting to open up a gap to the four sides below them so will want to go into the international break having maintained momentum.
It took a lot longer than many would have hoped for Dyche to start leaving a proper imprint on this Toffees side, but it looks like he has tightened things up defensively with Jarrad Branthwaite a big part of that.
Going forward the manager has always had to contend with problems at striker, but Calvert-Lewin maintaining some fitness has changed that in a big way.

With summer signings Beto and Youssef Chermiti, who scored the winner for the under-21s this week, also available it appears that things might be starting to take shape at Goodison Park, and Sutton’s assessment that relegation looks an unlikely threat seems accurate.
Evertonians will likely agree with Osman’s assessment on the points that were thrown away in the three home defeats, with the frustrating even greater in light of the relative domination on the day each time.
If Dyche can cut those slip-ups out by taking chances with more regularity then a third-straight battle against the drop won’t be a concern.
