Everton midfielder Andre Gomes' days at the club are numbered, despite his goal against Tottenham over the weekend, according to the Daily Mail.

The English newspaper reported on its website on 25 December that his days at the club appear to be numbered despite his solid return from injury.

The 30-year-old is among the top earners at Goodison Park and his contract runs out at the end of the season, with it unlikely to be renewed.

Right option?

Gomes, when fit, brings experience and technical ability to the team, potentially filling the void left by injured midfielders like Gueye and Doucoure.

His return to fitness aligns well with the team's immediate needs, especially with players heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, Gomes' injury-prone nature and status as one of the top earners make retaining him a financial risk for Everton.

The 30-year-old's performances have been inconsistent and the financial burden may outweigh his contributions.

Considering the Toffees' need for a more reliable and cost-effective midfield, parting ways with the Portuguese midfielder appears to be the pragmatic choice.

This decision will allow the club to prioritise building a more resilient and financially sustainable squad for the future given the numerous challenges they're facing behind the scenes.

In an ideal world, they could've used January to cash in on him, but given the lack of options and quality in the squad, it makes sense to keep him on for another six months.
