Everton defender Mason Holgate has decided against a Deadline Day move to Stuttgart, according to Dennis Bayer.

The Sky Sport Germany reporter shared via his Twitter page on Thursday (1 January) that high-flying Bundesliga side Stuttgart made an approach the previous day.

Holgate will not be joining the German club, but he continues to be linked with a switch to Sheffield United ahead of the 11pm deadline.

One to watch

Holgate has struggled during his time on loan at Southampton this season and his career is now very much at a crossroads.

A move to St Mary's was supposed to have the opposite effect, but he has started just four Championship matches.

On that basis, you would imagine that his chances of getting minutes at Goodison Park are numbered.

The 27-year-old could do with finding a club where he will play regularly, but whether Sheffield United is the right choice remains to be seen.

Now that a move to Stuttgart is off the cards, it is looking like Bramall Lane or nothing for the defender.

Selling to a direct relegation rival would be a risk, but if Everton can land a fee for Holgate on Deadline Day then why not?

If the Blades intend to push for a loan deal, though, then that is absolutely out of the question.
