Everton fans to be baffled by Neal Maupay turn of events, suggestion he cannot be taken seriously
Everton loanee Neal Maupay cannot be taken seriously after his antics against Tottenham, according to the Mirror’s Andy Dunn.
The striker copied James Maddison’s goal celebration when he netted for Brentford against Tottenham on Wednesday (31 January).
And despite Brentford going on to lose the match, Maupay then shared his celebration on Instagram, writing: “More goals and less relegations in my career than James Maddison.”
Writing for the Mirror (page 55, 2 February), Dunn wrote: “Everton fans would have needed a double-take when Neal Maupay was boasting about how his goal record compares favourably with Maddison’s.
“This is the same Neal Maupay who managed one goal in 32 appearances for Everton. And if my maths are correct, this is the same Neal Maupay who, in the Premier League, has averaged a goal every five hours and 12 minutes (compared with Maddison’s one every four hours and 54 minutes).
“And the same Neal Maupay who makes an assist once every 16 hours (compared with Maddison’s once every five hours and 36 minutes).
“In a way, you have to admire Maupay’s cockiness… and if he had the same self-assurance with the ball at his feet, you could actually take him seriously.”
Feisty
Maupay is clearly keen to rile his opponents as much as possible, and that certainly worked at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Maddison not happy at all that the Brentford man copied his celebration.
Many of the latter’s teammates then also got involved once the hosts turned things around, reminding the former of the golden rule which is to never celebrate too early.
It was certainly a dramatic encounter in North London, with the five-goal thriller ending 3-2 to Tottenham, with Maupay’s actions adding a bit of spice to the tie.
He really didn’t have much luck at all at Everton in terms of finding the back of the net, but the striker seems to have turned a corner at the Bees.

Having previously played there, it is a club he knows very well, but it remains uncertain where his long-term future lies.
The forward remains on loan at the West London side from the Toffees, but will surely complete a permanent move if he continues finding the back of the net.
In other Everton news, Amadou Onana has sent a two-word message to Maupay after what he did to Maddison.
