Sean Dyche will wince after what happened to Everton loanee Mason Holgate
Everton had a very quiet winter transfer window, with Mason Holgate’s loan to Sheffield United perhaps the only major talking point.
The defender was recently recalled from a loan at Championship club Southampton, having failed to land regular football at St Mary’s.
But he didn’t stay at Goodison Park for long, with Everton’s Premier League rivals Sheffield United snapping him up on loan for the remainder of the season, despite an approach from German club Stuttgart.
And he was given an immediate chance to impress Chris Wilder, with the manager handing Holgate a start against Aston Villa on Saturday (3 February).
But that Premier League clash at Bramall Lane certainly didn’t go to plan for the hosts, with Villa storming home to a 5-0 win.
Holgate will at least be pleased that he played the entire 90 minutes, but he will be massively disappointed at the scoreline.
The loss may have just given the defender an unwanted flashback, with Holgate also on the receiving end of a 5-0 loss on his Southampton debut, with the Saints having lost 5-0 to Sunderland in his first match [WhoScored, 4 February].
Everton manager Sean Dyche clearly hasn’t got the defender in his plans this season, having sent him out on loan twice now, but even he will wince at the unfortunate situation that Holgate has landed himself in.

The centre-back will not look back favourably on either debut, but he will now have his sights set on helping the Blades climb the Premier League standings.
Wilder’s side currently sit rock-bottom of the standings with 10 points, while Everton are also in the relegation zone, sitting in 18th place.
