Everton: James Tarkowski reaction to Beto penalty miss v West Ham United shared

James Tarkowski was unable to watch as Everton team-mate Beto stepped up to take his penalty against West Ham, according to Joe Thomas.

The journalist shared Tarkowski’s reaction to the spot-kick miss in an unseen moments article for the Liverpool Echo’s online edition [3 March].

Beto fluffed his lines from the spot in the first half and, while he did redeem himself with a goal, Everton went on to lose 3-1 to the Irons.

“Given the ongoing sagas around penalties and Everton strikers not scoring goals, Beto missing the chance felt like a cruel probability,” Thomas said.

“There was still disbelief around the stadium when Alphonse Areola pushed his effort away, however.

“One of those waiting for the crowd’s reaction to determine his own was James Tarkowski, who crouched on the halfway line with his back to the action.”

Everton unable to hold on in West Ham United defeat

Beto’s penalty miss was of course far from ideal, although he did make amends with a headed goal to open the scoring in Saturday’s (2 March) contest at Goodison Park.

That was a welcome moment for a player that set the Toffees back £30million when arriving from Udinese back in August.

Beto was brought into the side in favour of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had gone 20 games without a goal heading into the contest.

All in all it was a mixed afternoon for the Portuguese, but he did at least find the net – something Calvert-Lewin is unable to do for love nor money right now.

It was hugely disappointing that Everton were unable to see the job through – again – as Kurt Zouma, Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez snatched a 3-1 win for West Ham.

On the basis of his goalscoring performance against the Irons, though, Beto deserves to now retain his place against Manchester United next weekend.
