Everton: New York Times journalist slams Premier League after ‘ridiculous’ PSR development

Tariq Panja has destroyed the Premier League’s new financial fair-play “luxury tax” plan that could impact Everton, labelling it “dumb-headed”.

Reports from the Daily Mail (4 April) suggest that the Premier League are set to do away with point deductions for profit and sustainability breaches, only months after the Toffees suffered a six-point deduction.

Teams would instead be hit with a financial penalty for FFP breaches, labelled the “luxury tax” which New York Times journalist Panja has slammed labelling it a case of “ridiculous fear-mongering” by the Premier League.

Writing on X on Thursday (4 April) he said: “Ridiculous fear-mongering that PL teams won’t be able to be the world’s preeminent league, recruiting best players, because of PSR penalties.

“Revenue of PL double that of La Liga, second best. Only sporting sanctions can work, financial sanctions to financial problem is dumb-headed.

“The issue of competitive balance risk can also be tackled with intelligent rules on recruitment, squad size and player hoarding. Motivation of those not wanting to do this worth considering. Clubs should not be responsible for policing themselves.”

Will Everton receive a second point deduction for PSR breaches?

It does seem completely ridiculous that teams could be hit with financial penalties instead of sporting sanctions if this new plan is put in place as it seems completely unfair on teams that have already been punished on the pitch.

The likes of Manchester City and other teams at the top of the table will quite happily break any potential financial fair play rules if they only have to foot a fine rather than potentially miss out on a title or European football.

Everton have been thrown into the depths of a relegation battle because of their profit and sustainability breaches and a second point deduction could be on its way in the coming days, but those rules could now be set to change again.

The only teams these new “dumb-headed” rules help are the teams at the top of the table. If the Premier League have decided they want to take financial fair play seriously, rather than make an example of the Toffees, they have to stick by their established punishments.
