Everton: Martyn Ziegler shares Premier League stance on points deductions amid Goodison drama
Martyn Ziegler has claimed the Premier League is set to keep points-deduction penalties despite reports suggesting otherwise after what happened to Everton.
It was reported in the Daily Mail on Thursday (4 April) that the Premier League were considering abolishing points deductions and introducing a “luxury tax”.
This comes after both Everton and Nottingham Forest have seen points taken off them this season.
However, Ziegler has now written in The Times (5 April) that England’s top flight is set to keep points-deduction penalties but is considering introducing a tariff which would see clubs hit with fines rather than deductions for lesser offences.
This new system could come into place as soon as the 2025/26 Premier League season so long as it is approved at a meeting between clubs in June.
Everton and Sean Dyche would be right to demand clarity from the Premier League
Considering the Premier League is meant to be the pinnacle of English football, and perhaps even European football, this whole situation is farcical.
One minute one rule is in place and the next minute another rule is being considered, with the goalposts constantly shifting, and Everton the club facing the brunt of it.
Clarity is needed, and all 20 clubs deserve an equal playing field, with the Toffees probably wondering why it is only themselves and Nottingham Forest who have seen punishments handed to them.
It appears that the PSR rules are simply being made up as they go along, and Sean Dyche will be growing sick and tired of trying to manage a football club in this current climate.

The difference between playing in the Premier League and the Championship is huge financially, and things need to be sorted sooner rather than later so that the players and supporters can focus on what matters most, the football.
