Everton: Radical Premier League talks underway to change rules after what happened at Goodison
The Premier League are considering abolishing points deductions entirely and introducing a “luxury tax”, according to the Daily Mail.
Writing on their website (4 April), the news outlet report that the league are considering the changes after fears from the clubs following the points deductions handed out to Everton and Nottingham Forest.
A “luxury tax” could be introduced which would allow clubs to overspend if they pay a financial penalty too, and the changes could be implemented as soon as June with a vote expected at the end of the season.
“Premier League clubs are considering abolishing points deductions and introducing a ‘luxury tax’, Mail Sport can reveal,” they wrote.
“Radical reform has been discussed among the clubs and an entirely new system could be voted in at the end of the season meeting in June. As many as 17 of the 20 clubs are thought to be leaning towards significant change. Fourteen clubs need to be in agreement to get a rule change through.”

If you needed any further proof that the Premier League haven’t got a clue what they’re doing when it comes to FFP and PSR rules this is it.
The league literally made it up as they went along when it came to punishing Everton for the PSR rule breaches, and when they saw the backlash after the initial punishment they’ve had to scale it back.
The Premier League just wanted to try and stave off talk of an independent regulator so they could keep control, but they’ve royally messed it up and it’s the Toffees who have been made to suffer it the most.
A second points deduction is likely this season as the current rules are still in place, and that could be the difference between Everton being relegated to the Championship or not.
In turn that could cost the club tens of millions of pounds, only for them to scrap the punishments for anyone else in the future. It’s ridiculous and the club have every right to be absolutely fuming at this new development.
