Dermot Gallagher drops verdict as Sky Sports footage emerges from Everton v Sheffield United

Dermot Gallagher has dropped his verdict on the Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jack Robinson incident during the Everton clash with Sheffield United.

The Toffees claimed a 1-0 win over the Blades thanks to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal, but there was a moment that saw Calvert-Lewin booked for a confrontation with defender Robinson while the ball was off the pitch.

Replays showed that the striker did nothing other than get shoved but still got booked, and when reacting to the incident for Ref Watch on Sky Sports (13 May) the former referee believes there was an error but doesn’t feel Robinson should have been sent off.

“I think Robinson is of the opinion that Calvert-Lewin has thrown an elbow at him,” he said. “He’s not looking at the ball, which is still in play and behind him.

“He’s so adamant that he shoves him in the chest. Calvert-Lewin is mystified as to why he’s been given a yellow as the referee didn’t stop the game.

“I’m of the opinion that Robinson thinks Calvert-Lewin has tried to throw an elbow at him because he never looks at the ball. I think it’s a yellow card. There’s not enough in it for a red.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin back to his best for Everton

When the Toffees narrowly avoided relegation last season, many people were adamant that had Calvert-Lewin been fit they would have been safe way more easily.

This season that has been proven to be true, even with the fact that the team went on a run of one win in 15 games and the striker went on a run of 23 games without a goal.

Everton, without their eight-points deduction, would be sat in 11th place in the table and that’s because Sean Dyche has found a way to get the former England international back to his best for the team.

This incident saw him ruffle some feathers without even doing anything, but the fact that he was booked is quite stupid. Thankfully it doesn’t make any difference ahead of the final game of the campaign.

As he enters the final year of his contract the club has a big decision to make on his future, but he is now back to his best and could be a huge hand to the team next season once again.
