Everton could cash in on Amadou Onana as transfer update emerges at Goodison Park

Amadou Onana has been at the very centre of transfer rumours this season, and Everton could be about to cash in on the young midfield star.

Multiple clubs have been linked with the 22-year-old Belgian, while it looked as though he came close to an exit during the January transfer window when Barcelona came knocking for his signature.

Sean Dyche hailed the midfielder as “terrific” earlier this season, having become a popular figure at Goodison Park since arriving from Lille in 2022.

With the transfer window about to open, though, those rumours are bound to come flooding back, especially with the potential he holds.

In addition to this, it has now been reported, as per The Daily Mail, that Everton are interested in signing Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

This could be seen as a preemptive attempt to find a transfer target who could fill an Onana-sized hole in Sean Dyche’s squad, though many will be wary of signing the former Leeds United midfielder.

Could Everton replace Amadou Onana with Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips?

Due to the current financial issues on Merseyside, Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite are both high-profile stars at Goodison Park who have been linked with a move away to help lower the risk of any more PSR breaches.

Considering this, it would make sense for the club to cash in on Onana and bring in a loanee this summer. However, many will suggest that Everton must look further than Phillips.

The Man City midfielder has struggled ever since leaving Elland Road in the summer of 2022, joining Pep Guardiola’s side but experiencing limited minutes before going out on loan to West Ham United.

Even at the London Stadium, Phillips was unable to make the desired impact despite David Moyes’ advocating for the former Leeds star, going on to make just 10 appearances in all competitions.

There is no doubt that the 28-year-old is a talented player. With 31 appearances for England, there is no denying that. But he has certainly lost his way in recent seasons and a move to Everton could save his career.

The only question is if the Toffees want to risk bringing him to Goodison Park, especially after his last two seasons with Man City and West Ham.

In other Everton news, a European club is open to selling their centre-back for £21million as Jarrad Branthwaite’s transfer development has emerged.
