The Friedkin Group may still fail with their attempts to buy Everton should significant issues arise in the due diligence, according to Mark Douglas.

The I journalist reported on 21 June that despite being granted takeover exclusivity, the due diligence is a lot more than a box-ticking exercise.

They will now gauge the club's financial situation while they will themselves need to undergo the Premier League's Owners and Directors test.

Douglas wrote: "And, it has been emphasised, due diligence is not just a tick box exercise for the American group. There is still a chance that the deal could fall through if significant issues arise as they investigate the club’s financial situation.

"But the hope of all parties is that is not the case and work can soon begin on restoring stability and progress in Goodison Park’s final season."

Everton fans must be optimistic but still no clear reason to celebrate

While the Friedkin Group have been granted exclusivity to buy the club, there are still several steps that need to be completed before the deal is finalised.

The group will now conduct a thorough due diligence process to assess the financial situation which is a crucial step, as any significant issues uncovered during due diligence could potentially derail the deal.

In addition to due diligence, the Friedkin Group will also need to undergo the Premier League's test designed to ensure that prospective owners are fit and proper to run a top-flight club.

While fans can be optimistic about the potential takeover, it is important that they do not celebrate prematurely.

The deal is not yet finalised, and there are still several hurdles that need to be cleared before it can be completed.

Despite the challenges that lie ahead, there are reasons for optimism.

The Friedkin Group has a strong track record in the sports industry, having successfully acquired AS Roma in 2020 and hopefully, they can turn things around at Goodison Park.
