Jean-Philippe Gbamin fails medical for transfer one year on after Everton exit

Everton fans will always have one eye on former players who decided their futures lay away from Goodison Park.

Ellis Simms, 23, is a prime example of this, with some fans aiming shots at Farhad Moshiri after he was allowed to sign for Coventry City last summer, having come through the club’s academy.

One player that some fans may have forgotten about is Jean-Philippe Gbamin. The 28-year-old only made eight appearances for the Toffees, being sent out on loan a handful of times during his four years on Merseyside.

He eventually joined Dunkerque in Ligue 2, where he made 21 appearances, and is now available as a free agent. While a move to the USA looked to be on the cards for him as a free agent, the midfielder could be stuck without a club.

Sources have confirmed that Gbamin’s move to New York Red Bulls has collapsed due to a failed medical, as per Tom Bogert, with the MLS transfer window set to close in six days.

While his set of freak injuries were certainly not the player’s fault, it is yet another transfer that did not work out for the blue side of Merseyside.

He proved during his loan spells, especially in Turkey with Trabzonspor during the 2022/23 campaign, that he had the ability and talent, but it just never worked out for him.

It is impossible to predict what Gbamin’s career could have turned into had he managed to stay fit at Goodison Park, but there is now a possibility of the player being without a club ahead of next season.

The midfielder did not leave the club on bad terms even despite terminating his contract, so the fans will be hoping that he can find a new club soon after failing his medical ahead of a possible move to the MLS.

It’s a sorry sight when a football player’s career spirals down like this.
