Chris Sutton has slammed Everton defender Vitaliy Mykolenko for being out of position that allowed Brighton striker Danny Welbeck to score.

The Seagulls secured a comfortable 3-0 victory against the Toffees at Goodison Park on Saturday, 17 August.

Welbeck scored the second of the three goals in the 56th minute as the visitors enjoyed their first game of the campaign.

Sutton told the BBC on 17 August at 16:19: "Mykolenko gets high up the pitch so Brighton have a 3 v 2.

"Welbeck feints well and finishes brilliantly.

"What a start for Hurzeler."

Everton were not at the races in every position on Saturday

While Sutton's critique of Mykolenko highlights a specific tactical error, it's clear that Everton's defeat against Brighton was a collective failure rather than the fault of individual players like Mykolenko or Ashley Young.

The team's performance was lacklustre across the board, with defensive lapses, poor positioning and a general lack of cohesion evident throughout the match.

Sean Dyche must view this game not as a series of individual mistakes but as a systemic issue requiring a robust team response.

It's crucial for Dyche to rally the squad, emphasising the need for increased intensity and focus in training.

This setback should serve as a catalyst for collective improvement, where every player, regardless of their role, understands their part in the team's recovery and future success.

It's only the first game week but it's an eye-opener that things could get a lot worse if they're not addressing instantly.
