Seamus Coleman priority verdict drops after Everton injury developments

Alan Myers believes that Everton captain Seamus Coleman should be able to “play when he wants” for both club and country.

The 35-year-old was recently injured during the Republic of Ireland’s v defeat against England, which has since seen the defender return to Finch Park for treatment [Irish Independent, 8 September].

Coleman only just returned from a knock and is now set for some additional time on the sidelines, leading to suggestions he should prioritise club football.

While replying to a fan on X (9 September) Myers shared his verdict: “To be fair, I think if another player falls on top of you It doesn’t matter what age you are.

“I think Seamus should be able to play when he wants, as Alan Shearer said, play as long as you can because your career is over soon enough.”

Seamus Coleman needs to choose between Everton and Ireland

As much as the right-back would likely want to continue playing for both club and country, it feels like the Irishman needs to choose between the two.

The vast majority of his 2023/24 campaign was spent on the sidelines and so far, the 2024/25 season hasn’t been much different.

To make matters worse, one of the main areas that Sean Dyche’s men lack depth in is right-back.

The likes of Nathan Patterson and Ashley Young play as full-backs but the latter of the two also seems to be injured consistently while Young is almost 40 years old.

The summer transfer window was a time for Dyche to tackle the right-back problem head on but instead, both he and Kevin Thelwell have let fans down by not bringing in another full-back despite being linked to several names such as Kieran Tripper [David Ornstein, 22 August].

Of course, it’s still early doors in the season and there’s plenty of time for things to change but, at the moment, it feels like another season of mediocrity is on the table for the Toffees.
