Dan Friedkin sent January transfer message after Everton takeover developments

Henry Winter has told Dan Friedkin that the Everton squad needs “further strengthening” in January after takeover developments at Goodison Park.

The Toffees confirmed on Monday (23 September) that the Friedkin Group had reached an agreement with Blue Heaven Holdings to acquire Farhad Moshiri’s controlling stake at Goodison Park.

Although the news has been widely welcomed by fans who are glad to see the back of Moshiri, former Times journalist Winter has told Friedkin that he will have plenty of work to do in the January transfer window.

Writing on X on Monday (23 September) he said: “There are many other attractions to Friedkin, including the historic nature of the club, one of the founding members of both the Football League and Premier League.

“Everton have a manager in Sean Dyche widely respected within football, despite recent criticism following poor results and performances (and the caveat here is that new owners often like new managers).

“They have good players like Jarrad Branthwaite, Jordan Pickford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, James Garner, Iliman Ndiaye, amongst others, although the squad still needs further strengthening in January.”

Will Dan Friedkin complete Everton takeover at Goodison Park?

There is certainly a feeling of positivity around Goodison Park after years of misery under the ownership of Moshiri, but it would be naive of supporters to assume this is going to be a quick fix for the prospective new owner.

Yes, the squad that Dyche has at his disposal is more than capable of keeping the Toffees in the Premier League, even if the start to the season has been poor, but it is far from perfect.

There is a lack of depth, particularly at fullback where the Blues have been reliant on the ageing duo of Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young and in attack where the exit-bound Calvert-Lewin continues to be flogged week after week.

Friedkin is expected to be able to complete his takeover before the turn of the new year [Alan Myers, 23 September]. While that could well mean the new owner is in position for the transfer window, it doesn’t mean he will be able to spend freely.

The last thing anyone at Goodison will want is to breach profit and sustainability rules in the first months of their new ownership.
