The Friedkin Group will not realistically be able to spend big in the January transfer window at Everton, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Farhad Moshiri has agreed a deal to sell his controlling stake at Goodison Park to the Roma owners, with a deal expected to be completed before the end of the year with some elements outside of TFG's control [Ben Jacobs, 26 October].

While supporters are excited to see the start of a new era on Merseyside, Plumley insists it would be naive to assume the Toffees can spend freely because of previous PSR concerns under Moshiri's ownership.

"From the numbers we can see and the battles they have had with PSR, it's not the most realistic thing to expect them to go and spend big in January," Plumley exclusively told Goodison News.

"We need to see how the deal is structured how much of the debt that is owed to Moshiri gets wiped off and how that plays out.

When will the Friedkin Group complete Everton takeover at Goodison Park?

"But if you look at the losses we've seen from that football club and the challenges they've had with PSR, that's not gone away, that's not a quick fix.

"I think if you're looking at it through a pragmatic financial lens, I don't think it's likely that we would see them spend big in January.

"I just don't think the numbers would support that direction of travel, to be honest, but that's from the outside looking in based on the way we've seen the finances play out at Everton."

The Toffees are understood to be hopeful that their transfer business in and out of Goodison Park this summer will have ensured they avoid a point deduction for breaching PSR limits this season [Chris Beesely, 6 September].

But that doesn't mean that TFG will be able to come in and throw money around recklessly if their takeover is completed before the mid-season transfer window opens.

It will take time for all of the books to be balanced on the blue half of Merseyside and only then can the Toffees begin reaping the rewards of the new ownership.
