Everton could do a lot worse than move for England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley as Sean Dyche's successor.

Carsley won five of his six matches as interim boss of the England senior side, guiding the Three Lions to Nations League promotion.

The 50-year-old went about his business in an understated manner - perhaps too understated at times - and certainly enhanced his reputation even accounting for the Greece loss at Wembley.

He will now go back to his previous job of managing the country's U21s, but it is not likely to be a position he stays in beyond the next 2025 U21s European Championship.

And if Carsley decides to move back into club management, Everton may well see him as a wise contender to succeed Dyche.

Lee Carsley touted as contender for Everton job

McNulty went on to add that, given Everton's plight, "it would also be a huge task for any manager, particularly one who hasn't managed full-time at club level."

That suggestion may not go down all that well with Toffees fans, who would rather see a big name appointed for the first season at Bramley-Moore Dock.

However, Carsley showed he is a safe pair of hands and, importantly, he knows Everton well given he spent six years at Goodison Park during his playing days.

Indeed, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook also touted Carsley as a contender to succeed Dyche [8 October], who will surely not last beyond this season - if that.

Top-flight teams will not exactly be rushing to appoint Carsley, but with more success with the England age-grade side next summer, his reputation will only enhance further.

If nothing else, he certainly deserves to be mentioned as one of those who steps in once Dyche does eventually go.
