Neal Maupay return: Sean Dyche told what to do at Everton
Everton fans would “absolutely hammer” Neal Maupay if he returned from his loan spell at Marseille, Darren Bent has said.
Speaking on talkSPORT (2 January, 6:21pm), Bent wondered what Dyche could do if the permanent transfer to Marseille – agreed as part of his season-long loan move from Goodison Park – fell through.
After he mocked the Toffees’ 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on social media, Bent urged Dyche to make Maupay face the brunt of the Blues’ faithful at Goodison if he did somehow end up back in their squad.
Bent said: “You never know in football – if all of a sudden he doesn’t get bought, he has to go back to that football club – he’s got no chance of going back out there in front of them (fans).”
“If I’m Sean Dyche and he has to come back, I’m putting him out there. Take that. I’d put him on the bench, and make him warm up in front of the fans – they would absolutely hammer him.”
Neal Maupay return unthinkable prospect for Everton fans
Even if Maupay had never accessed a social media account in his life, few supporters would want to see him donning the royal blue shirt again given his woeful on-field displays at Goodison Park.
Dyche clearly has the same view of the Frenchman’s time as a Toffee, having twice sent him out on season-long loans and dismissing the recent comments of a player who is out of sight, out of mind.

Given Marseille have an obligation to buy Maupay permanently, the chances of the 28-year-old being seen again on Merseyside again are slim, and the prospect is a grim thought for the Goodison faithful.
However, the occurrence of an injury – which can often see loanees return to parent clubs if surgery is required – could raise the possibility of Maupay returning to Finch Farm, and the first team, for his rehab.
Bent’s scenario, however, is highly unlikely to play out, and given Dyche has a forward at the top of his January shopping list [Sky Sports, 1 January], the plan is clearly for Maupay to remain near the bottom of the priorities list.
