Carragher moots Moyes to Everton on Sky Sports MNF, delivers Dyche sack verdict

David Moyes could be an option to replace Sean Dyche at Everton, according to Jamie Carragher.

Assessing the Toffees’ situation, Carragher said the fans are divided on whether or not the Merseyside-based club should sack Dyche right now.

The player-turned-pundit reckons veteran tactician Moyes, a foreign coach or an out-of-work manager could take the reins at Goodison Park, but backed Dyche as the right man to guarantee relegation safety.

“There’s definitely a divide between Everton supporters and the divide and the divide is do they want Sean Dyche to leave right now?”, Carragher said on Sky Sports MNF (6 January).

“And, I think the other half of those supporters probably want a new manager, maybe at the end of the season.

“The big worry they’ve got is, ‘If we change the manager now – a manager who has kept us up in the last two seasons – would we get relegated with another manager coming in?

“A manager who is out of work, maybe a foreign manager comes in, maybe it is David Moyes. I don’t know.

“But, what I’d say right now, there’s also another school of thought. It’s just not about being in the Premier League.

“Of course, they have to be there with the new stadium next season, but there are still a lot of Evertonians who are actually looking at it and thinking this is just not good enough for Everton Football Club.

“19 games this season and they have only won three.

“For me, I would keep Sean Dyche in that position because I think it’s almost a guarantee.

“The fact that they’ve got the stadium coming, it’s imperative that they have to be in this division next season.

“I wouldn’t say Sean Dyche guarantees it, but I think his past gives you a great chance of staying in the division.”

Jamie Carragher could be wrong about Sean Dyche at Everton

Carragher is right. Dyche has a reputation for saving clubs from relegation. The Englishman previously did at Burnley and has done it at Everton in the last two seasons.

However, there are no guarantees that he will repeat the trick for a third consecutive season, with the Toffees sitting just one point above the relegation zone after 19 games.

The Goodison Park outfit can extend that gap to four points if they win their game (against top-toppers Liverpool, mind you) in hand.

However, having won only two Premier League games since October, things are looking rather bleak for the Blues.

More worryingly, Everton have managed to score only five goals in the league since November. For context, even bottom-placed Southampton netted seven times in that period.

Everton AS Roma Dan Friedkin
Dan Friedkin is the Everton owner.

Therefore, it is high time that The Friedkin Group decided to part ways with Dyche and bring in a new manager.

The players could also benefit from such a change, having played under the 53-year-old for two years now.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have readied £16.6m to sign this defender this month.
